Hosting-a-major-player--sma.gif (18874 bytes) FROM SILICON VALLEY TO THE MAWDDACH ESTUARY – U.S. INVESTMENT PAVES WAY FOR NEW HI-TECH COMPANY

A new UK Internet provider has been established in Gwynedd following a major investment by a US based technology company.

Datex UK is the European arm of Datex, a service of BroadSpire, Inc. which is a US-based company that specialises in complex managed Internet hosting services and lists Sheraton Hotels, Miramax, HBO, NBC, Yale University and other blue chip companies among its clients.

The new company, based at Bontddu, near Dolgellau, is already hosting web sites for several major companies and has plans to expand throughout the UK and Europe over the next few months.

Keith Williams, Head of Operations UK and Europe for Datex, said: “Datex is a major player within the web hosting sector and our expansion into the UK market will bring added benefits to existing and new clients. This is a major investment by a US company into Gwynedd and highlights the fact that you can locate such a business in just about any location.”

The company, which currently employs two people in Mid Wales and operates a Data Centre in London, is discussing its expansion plans with the Welsh Development Agency’s Mid Wales Division. It plans to create up to 35 new jobs through support and technical staff within the first two years. The US company is anticipating investing at least £750,000 into the UK operation over the next three years.

The company provides Web hosting and Internet site operations solutions for companies who have, or will have large complex Web sites on the Internet. They already have over one hundred UK based customers and plan to expand further into the European market.

“We have a multi-million dollar turnover in the US and decided we needed to expand our operations in Europe to capitalise on the growing Internet revolution. The strong demand we’ve seen from the European market for our services even without having a local support presence demonstrates the strength and superiority of our global service offering,” said Arun Srinivasan, Chief Operating Officer of Datex in Los Angeles, USA.

“We believe that the experienced team we’ve put together to establish the business in the UK will enhance our position in the market and demonstrate how far we are willing to go to help our customers use the Internet to gain a competitive business advantage.”

He added: “Utilising the latest technology means and our revolutionary customer support system, we can base an Internet operation almost anywhere – in a city or, as in this case, in a rural location.

“We have a 24-hour support team responding to clients electronically and by conventional telephone which means that so long as we have Internet connectivity and a telecommunications infrastructure, we can respond to customer requests immediately, whether night or day, and it does not matter where we have our base.”

Siān Lloyd Jones, WDA Executive Director – Mid Wales, said the US investment into Gwynedd highlighted the benefits of new technology to the local economy. “This is a substantial investment by Datex. We are currently discussing the company’s future growth plans and ways of supporting its expansion in rural Wales.

“Technology-based companies are one of the fastest growing sectors in Wales and particularly rural Wales where location is not necessarily an issue because of the technology used. Such enterprises can bring new and exciting employment opportunities into rural areas."
